Health & Welfare Form 5500
Many employers are chiefly familiar with 5500s as the annual filing for their retirement plan but some don't realize that Health & Welfare Plans may also be subject to the filing.
Typically, Health & Welfare Plans will include employer offered medical, dental, vision, life and disability benefits. Many Employee Assistance Plans (EAP) and Wellness Programs will also fall into this category.
However, most Health & Welfare Plans are actually exempt from the 5500 requirement. Generally speaking, such plans are only required to file if they have 100 or more employees participating on the first day of the plan year. Additionally, plans sponsored by a government entity or church will be exempt regardless of size.
